If you’re in desperate need of a holiday, but you’re on a tight budget, you might think that a holiday is off the cards. Thankfully, there are budget friendly holiday options available to you, so that no matter your budget, you can still find the perfect getaway.
In this holiday guide, we discuss everything you need to know about holiday-ing on a budget. Here are our top tips, plus a handy example to get you started.
Tips for finding holiday deals
Regardless of the kind of holiday you’re searching for, there are some general things you can consider to secure the best deals available.
Know what you want
Our first tip is to know what you’re looking for, but to be flexible with what you find. When you start searching for a deal, you should know what kind of deal you’re looking for. Whether it’s near a beach, in the mountains, or the middle of nowhere, know what you want and be flexible with the options you find. Having a general idea of what you want is a great first step to find what you’re searching for.
Use comparison sites
Technology is great for finding deals on most products and services, and holidays are no exception. Whether it’s trivago, Booking.com, Hotels Combined, Compare The Market, or all four, using a comparison site can be great when looking for a travel destination on a budget.
If you’re looking for flights, using a site like Skyscanner can also be super helpful. Skyscanner compares multiple flights to one destination, so you can choose the most affordable flight for you. Additionally, they have deals on flights, you can choose nearby airports, pick a random destination, and more.
Many people clear their cookies, or use Incognito mode, when searching for flights and other deals online. While you could still choose to do this, as it won’t hurt, experts have stated that it has no influence on the prices of fares being offered.
Consider package deals
Rather than needing to worry about booking flights, accommodation, food, and sometimes transfers, you might want to consider looking into package deals. According to Randall Deer, Managing Director of Ignite Travel, package deals can end up being cheaper because they “buy everything in bulk at low cost”, which allows them to bundle expenses and offer them cheaper to their customers.
Depending on where you want to go, and the type of holiday you’re looking for (i.e. cruise, hotel, hostel), a package deal could end up saving you money, not to mention stress.
Do your research
Ultimately, to find the best deal, you need to know everything that’s out there. Do your research into different holidays, work out the differences between a package deal and booking everything yourself, and be aware of any fees or charges of doing so through different websites.
A quick tip!
If you’re looking for a cruise, it could be best to book on a Thursday. According to Cruise Critic, this is because prices fluctuate during different seasons, but also throughout the week. So, booking on a Thursday will likely find you the best deal.
A quick holiday idea
To give you an example of how you can put all of these tips into practice, we have found one holiday idea, which has been calculated from the starting point of Brisbane, Queensland. We’ll include the price of this holiday, too.
Finding the flights
Using Skyscanner, we searched for a return flight in the month of August, anywhere. From this search, we found that there were flights from Brisbane, Queensland to Newcastle, New South Wales for just $133. This was for a flight leaving on Friday, 6th August 2021 and another returning Monday, 9th August 2021.
Finding the accommodation
Now that we know the ‘when’ and the ‘where’, let’s find some suitable accommodation. Depending on what your preferences are (whether you wish to stay in a hostel or a hotel), there are a range of pricing options.
For a bed in a six-bed mixed dormitory at Backpackers Newcastle, it will be approximately $94 for three nights.
For a standard twin room at The Criterion Hotel, it’s $183 for three nights.
Lastly, for a double studio at The Mark Studios, it’ll be $294 for three nights.
Now that the two big costs are sorted, it’s time to consider other costs. Of course, you’ll need to eat food for the duration of your holiday, which could cost anywhere from $50 to $100 per day. Let’s be generous, and allocate $400 for food for the whole stay.
The final cost to consider is: fun stuff. You might want some extra cash to spend on other things, whether it’s a tour, an activity, or even just hiring a surfboard for a few hours. Plus, in the case of an emergency, it’s always a good idea to have some extra cash ready. Let’s say, an extra $100 for other stuff.
A final summary
So, for a four-day holiday to Newcastle from Brisbane, you will be looking to spend anywhere from $727 to $927. That’s just $181.75 or $231.75, per day. If you’re looking for something more affordable, you could scrap the flights and find something closer to you that’s accessible by car or public transport.
This holiday was found and calculated in roughly 15-minutes. If you spend a bit more time, do some more research, or wait for a good deal, you could find something of even better value. Regardless, it’s clear that you don’t need to break the bank to have a break from reality.
