Why travel to New Zealand?

After being decimated by COVID-19, international travel is roaring back for Australians. Just as it was before the pandemic, one of our most popular destinations to visit is our neighbour across the ditch, New Zealand.

Aussies love travelling to New Zealand due to both the proximity and similarity to our own backyard, as well as the simple fact that New Zealand is a beautiful country in its own right with a variety of unique destinations to explore.

In the year ending March 2020, there were 1.5 million Australian visitors to New Zealand, making up 39% of all international visitors to the country. In 2019, Australian visitors spent a total of NZD $2.7 billion (approximately AUD $2.5 billion) in New Zealand during their stay, making up 15% of total international visitor expenditure in the country!

What is a travel loan?

A travel loan, or holiday loan, is simply a personal loan used to pay for travel expenses. According to our data, holiday and travel are commonly listed as one of the most common reasons for taking out a loan, with customers using them to pay for some of the following:

  • Flight costs
  • Accommodation
  • Travel insurance
  • Transport and car hires
  • Tours and activities
  • Activities and events

With holidays (particularly overseas ones) easily costing five figures, a holiday loan can allow you to avoid paying for the whole thing in a lump sum or overspending with a credit card. By borrowing a lump sum to be repaid in manageable instalments, you know exactly what your trip will cost before you even leave the country with a travel loan.

How much does it cost to travel to New Zealand?

Research from Westpac shows the average spend per international trip by Australians was around $5,000. But New Zealand is a bit more affordable as a destination: According to Budget Direct, the average cost per person for each trip is roughly $3,350.

As with any holiday, the total will cost will vary for each person/trip, with a host of different factors influencing your final figure:

  • The country/destination
  • The time of year
  • Your airfares and accommodation
  • Food and drink expenses
  • Activities in your destination
  • Shopping and other purchases
  • Other travel expenses (Ubers, public transport etc.)
  • Unforeseen expenses (lost possessions, medical issues, insurance claims etc.)

Budget Your Trip recommends budgeting for about NZ $185 each day in New Zealand. As of February 2023, that's $169 Australian dollars. Given the average Aussie spends 8.6 nights on a New Zealand holiday, that's equivalent to $1,453.

What to do/see in New Zealand

There's no shortage of things to do in New Zealand, despite what Australians might tell you. New Zealand is home to some of the most impressive and serene landscapes on earth; it's rich in the culture of the indigenous Māori people; and it's a popular destination for adventure lovers too.

Here's a shortlist of the best things to do and see in New Zealand: we couldn't fit them all in!

Hobbiton

If you're a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, movies in general, or if you just like cool-looking landscapes, Hobbiton is a must-see! Sitting just outside of Matamata near Waikato, Hobbiton is home to the movie set of The Shire, which featured in Sir Peter Jackson’s epic movie series.

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (known as just 'Te Papa', which is Māori for 'treasure box') is New Zealand's national museum. This museum is located on Wellington's waterfront and sees more than 1.5 million people visit every year.

If you're interested in learning about New Zealand's cultural heritage (particularly that of its Māori people), then you don't want to miss this one.

Skiing and snowboarding

New Zealand is well-known for its extreme sports, and thanks to its cooler climate it offers some amazing ski and snowboard fields. The New Zealand ski season typically kicks off in the South Island from mid to late June and finishes in October, with the top spots usually being Mt Ruapehu, Mt Hutt, Porters Alpine Resort and Coronet Peak Ski Area.

Bungy jumping

Did you know New Zealand was the first country in the world to commercialise bungy jumping for the public? The country is famous for its bungy jumping spots, with site of the Kawarau Suspension Bridge just outside of Queenstown arguably being the most famous. Thrill-seekers, this one is a must-try!

Explore Auckland

Although not the capital, Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and naturally offers a lot to tourists. Some of the top things to do in Auckland and surrounding areas include the iconic Sky Tower, the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and visiting the nearby wine regions.

Rotorua

Located on the North Island, Rotorua is known for its geothermal activity, including bubbling mud pools and natural hot springs. It is also home to several Maori cultural sites and offers outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain biking.

Milford Sound

In the heart of Fiordland National Park is Milford Sound, a stunning fjord famous for its majestic scenery, including towering mountains, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife.

Health and safety concerns for New Zealand

Couple camping in mountains, New Zealand

New Zealand is generally a very safe place to travel. The Australian Government's Smartraveler website, for example, recommends taking 'normal safety precautions' when visiting, which means minimal risk to tourists. However, that doesn't mean your health and safety are guaranteed.

Some of the more likely things to be mindful of when travelling to New Zealand include:

  • Weather and natural hazards. New Zealand is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions depending on the region, so check a natural hazards map before booking and stay up-to-date with local weather forecasts.
  • Outdoor activities. With extreme activities like skiing and snowboarding, bungy jumping, speed boating and more, the risk of injury is increased. Wear the appropriate safety gear and ensure you have adequate travel insurance coverage.
  • Wildlife. New Zealand is home to a variety of unique and sometimes dangerous wildlife, such as venomous spiders and snakes, sharks, and jellyfish.
  • Road safety. Many roads in New Zealand, particularly in less urban areas, can be very narrow and winding, making them difficult to drive on.

It's generally a good idea to research any potential risks and hazards you might face before spending money on flights. If you get into trouble in New Zealand, have the contact details for the local emergency services handy, as well as the Australian consulate.
